What Should We Plant in Our Winter Garden?

10-27-2009winterveg.jpg

We were home visiting family in Southern California this past weekend and, much to our surprise, Mom's got a spot in the backyard all ready for a winter garden. This is her first shot at it (she's more of a summer gardener). So she's looking for ideas...

We thought we'd put the question out here to Re-nest readers: What would you plant in early November in Southern California? What are some easy, hardy winter vegetables? She's got quite a bit of space, so the more suggestions the better.

We know greens do well in the winter ... but what are some other fun veggies to grow? What are you planting right now? And do you have any tips or tricks up your sleeve that you'd be willing to share?

I live in Tucson and just planted onions, broccoli, spinach, potatoes and garlic. If the ground doesn't freeze where she is, this is the time to plant all those root veggies too!

I planted spearmint, brocoli, turnips, carrots, cilantro, brussels sprouts and a whole bunch of greens (kale, collards ect.) at the end of last month. I live in zone 8 so you may be in a better temp for planting now than I would be. Also now is a great time to plant blueberry bushes. I have three waiting for me at home :) just make sure they are the right variety for your area.

I'm in Los Angeles and I've planted carrots, turnips, radishes, kale, swiss chard, broccoli, kohlrabi, shelling peas, and snap peas. You have to be flexible though because the weather is so wacky here you won't have temps consistently in the 60s. It can go anywhere from 60 up 90 all in the same week. So I had some plants not make the hotter days so you replant and hope for the best.
