How To: Start a No-Dig Garden

6-18-2008nodig.jpg

We think, for the most part, that lawns are overrated. They take too much water and maintenance.

On the other hand, we think organic fruits and veggies rock. And, although we have no yard, we've decided to live vicariously through Jonathan ... what will he plant?

If we had a yard, we'd want to get rid of the lawn and start a garden, and this is probably how we'd do it ...

We'd start a no-dig garden like Pat Marfisi.

We're amazed at the way you can transform a yard into a series of low-water, raised beds with only a few materials.

Here's what you'll need:

  • newspaper
  • alfalfa
  • straw
  • compost
  • blood meal
  • bone meal

Here's how Pat does it.

In one shot you can get rid of your lawn (without the back breaking work of digging it up) and create a sustainable, organic garden.

Thanks to Hulda for the tip!
