Tomatoes, eggplants, rabbits, figs, and a cannibalistic chicken.
Read all about Manny Howard's attempt to farm his 800 square foot Brooklyn backyard in this week's New York magazine and take the video tour.
Neither marital problems nor a nasty maggot problem could stop this guy's ultimate locavore experiment.

Granted I generally dislike New York Magazine (almost as much as I tend to abhor anything in the "features" dept of the Times), but it kind of drives me crazy how much the media tends only to feature the efforts of the upper middle class in sustainable living. I live in Brooklyn. I don't have a backyard. Or a garage to convert into a "barn". I'm never going to have either of those things, unless I unexpectedly come into a lot of money. And I'm not even that poor. Spaces like a backyard and/or garage are incredibly scarce here, and generally only available to the wealthiest Brooklynites. Especially situations where you have full control of such a space.
This sort of thing sends the message that living green is only for rich people, and that if you don't have a lot of space, time, and money, there's nothing you can do. So keep running that AC, driving to work, eating "conventional" produce and processed junk, and buying plastic crap! Of course, this couldn't be further from the truth, there is a lot that the average person can do to decrease their footprint. Much of it will actually save you money.
But the more magazines like New York stick to covering the solutions of the wealthy, the more us plebs will assume you have to be rich to go green.

The comments section on this in Kitchen post is good...
Me, I hate this bunny-killing egotrip pawned off as sustainable living by NYmag. What a surprise, the conclusion is that it doesn't work. duh.
Not like that it doesn't.
Like this, it does:

p.s.
AT really needs to work on critical thinking with the Greening;
an "ultimate locavore experiment" this ain't

I didn't see this the first time it was posted on ReNest but I seriously can't stand this experiment. It was rushed and seemed half-assed and completely uncaring. I was hoping some vet would have him arrested for neglect - as if this chump would use a vet.

Not like that it doesn't. -- exactly
I thought it was pretty obvious he was doing it as an Xtreme Urban Challenge!!! rather than an actual *sustainable* interest in doing so. But I guess you need the lore of maggoty neglected rabbits and impending spousal conflict to make the $$ you'd want to make from the NYer. Seriously - go read Animal Vegetable Miracle instead.
