NatureMill: Compost Appliance

8_16_2007-naturemill.jpg

For the compost challenged who have $399 to spare and enjoy a bit of extra space in the kitchen, utility room, back hall, or garage, here's an easy, mechanized way to turn food scrap into fertilizer: the NatureMill.

We have blogged it before over at The Kitchen, but we're wondering what AT's green readers think of this appliance, which uses a modest amount of power (10 watts) to provide a nice, warm environment ideal for quickly producing compost with a minimum amount of odor. The company promises a fresh batch every two weeks or so.

We like the concept, but there's simply no place it would fit in our home. We'd be all over a version that would make use of the wasted space in the dead corners of our kitchen, or even a micro-version that would fit under (or be integrated with?) the kitchen sink.

I'd be all over this if it was just a teensy bit smaller. I measured, and it will fit in a standard kitchen base cabinet (with some kind of roll-out tray), but it means dedicated a whole base unit just to this appliance. If it could be half-a-cabinet and leave room for a skinny recycling bin beside it, I'd be sold.
