Plants: Air Purifying and Healing Powers?

1-21-2009gerbera.jpgWe've been thinking a lot about indoor air quality over the past few weeks. It's Bedroom Month, and we think the greenest thing you can do in your bedroom is to breathe clean air.
Some people use air purifiers, other people open their windows, and another group of people use plants to clean their indoor air.

We've been reading about the potential air purifying power of certain plants for some time now -- but we also know that there are plenty of people who think those exact air purifying claims are bunk. What do you think?

We were pretty intrigued when we came across this post at Treehugger -- apparently, regardless of the air purifying stuff, new research has shown that plants have a healing influence on hospital patients. We think that is amazing. And we totally buy it. When our cats don't eat our indoor plants, they always make us feel better.

regardless of whether or not they clean the air, most people have positive memories attached to them: days spent in the park, camping, childhoods spent in the garden, receiving flowers on a special occasion, etc. we associate plants with springtime, with warmth, with growth. and they're just pretty.

and yes, everyone can keep houseplants successfully. if you've had trouble in the past, the first thing you should consider is where you get them. make sure you buy your houseplants from a quality nursery that cares for them properly upon their arrival. after being mistreated, many plants will have trouble recovering. even if you buy them the day they arrive at home depot, before they've even had a chance to be ignored, they may be in shock from travelling. a good nursery would have properly acclimated them. they'll also be able to help you select the right plant for your 'skill level' and house. yeah, you'll pay a bit more, but it'll be cheaper than replacing them over and over!
