Survey: How Does Your Garden Grow?

Because it's garden month across most of the AT sites, we're thinking a lot about plants, and flowers, and veggies. As we've said before, we'd like to garden, but we don't have any yard to speak of. We know we could plant in containers, but part of us wants to hold out for the "real deal." A little patch of land to call our own ...

Which leads us to our question:

some windowsill pots of herbs is about all i can manage living in brooklyn, but i kick myself for not taking better advantage of having a huge yard when i lived out in colorado for a spell.

i just didn't yet realize what having LAND means. now, all i want is LAND. sheesh.

I have a shared veggie garden with my neighbor. I rent, so I cant rip up the lawn like i'd like to, but the little lawn we have is pesticide free and has some nice drought tolerant plants along the house

Have any of you given your plant a shot of potassium lately? Peg on the Scott Common Sense community suggests this as a good idea:

Once you've had your banana for the day, take the peel and cut into 1-3 inch pieces. Drop into your blender with a couple of cups of water and whip for a few seconds. Strain into your watering can and finish filling up with water. Give your leafy friends a nice drink. You can take the shredded pieces and mulch around your bedding plants, too, tucking them under about an inch of soil to discourage pests.

I have potted herbs and a dwarf lemon tree in my apartment along with various "house" plants. I plan on adding mint, catgrass, and a large-ish terrarium in the next week.

I'd say go for it and start container gardening anyways! It's SO satisfying and addicting and will change the way you see your apartment I promise you. . I had Brooklyn apt. outdoor space for years before I started container gardening in it and I cant believe I waited this long to use it. Stop waiting for perfection just do it !

I've had single plants before, basil and a spider plant thingy, but both died. It was very sad. but I thought not to give up and just retried the basil, along with lavender and rosemary, in a windowsill container and they're all flourishing now! so satisfying to pull a few leaves off when I need it. (I'm just so antsy i want the lavender to bloom already!!)

and yes kdkaboom, I miss my texas land too here in ny but it's nice to finally miss something about the homeland. and I'm glad brooklyn can act as an in-between-ish.
