When we imagine Michael Pollan's home and yard, we picture perfect raised beds, glistening red tomatoes, and (perhaps?) a clucking chicken or two? In short, we imagine perfection; however, three years ago, when Pollan bought his current Berkeley home, the front yard was anything but.
Pollan and his wife, Judith Belzer, wanted a relaxed, beautiful, highly-functional (read: edible), and totally eco-friendly front yard, where they could entertain guests and hang out with their family. It was a pretty tall order, so they hired landscape architect Bernando Lopez.
An article in the San Francisco Chronicle explains, in detail, what Lopez did to completely transform Pollan's yard from a strangely-shaped, sort of useless space into a beautiful, sustainable garden.
