Yes ...the same Chia that brought us the Chia Pet!
Just recently, I received a Chia Terra Cota Gourmet Herb Garden for a birthday present. (I've been going on and on about wanting fresh herbs in the kitchen.)
Has anyone else tried one of these?

The kit comes with pots, seed packets, and (here's the strange part) 4 chia growing "sponges." I'm pretty excited about having fresh herbs, but also a bit wierded out by the fact that they won't be grown in soil.
Thoughts?
Also: how does one keep cats -- cats that love to eat anything green -- away from indoor herb gardens?
get your cat her own plant to chew on and keep the others out of reach. my cat was fascinated with my houseplants for a week or so, then got bored with them. now she just sleeps under the big one like it's her personal jungle.
I also find the 'growing spong' weird, though...

I wonder more about what has been put into the sponge to make the stuff grow so well. The sponge takes a really long time to biodegrade into the surrounding soil after transplant.
I've seen another sponge seed starter on the market. Same stuff as in seed starting soil? These sponges sprout the seed very fast, which is a confidence builder for those who perceive themselves to have "brown" thumbs.

I bought one for my youngest munchkin for her birthday this past year (she turned 8 in dec). She was interested in gardening and not paitent enough for spring.
Everything but the parsley seemed to grow pretty well for her and it was simple and small enough to keep them on the side of the sink in the kitchen where she could water them without me worrying about the mess.
The only complaint I really have is that the pots are so small they really are more "starters" than functional for a kitchen herb garden. We're going this weekend to buy her bigger pots and transfer them to give the plants more room to grow (and ourselves more herbs!) BUT she also enjoyed it and the little pots will be perfect for starting other things for her.
