Wine Bottle Plant Nanny

9_2_2008-plantnanny1.jpgHere's a green way to solve one of our biggest problems: forgetting to water plants. Not incidentally, it also provides a good reason to polish off a few bottles of wine...

No, no, those plants aren't boozing it up. That's the Plant Nanny in action. It's a terracotta stake that's just the right size for a empty wine bottle; you just fill the wine bottle up and tip it into the Plant Nanny. They'll last for a while; it depends, of course, on how thirsty your plant is.

A set of four runs $18—not cheap, but that is less expensive than replacing a nice houseplant. We found them online at Olive Barn.

Why do you need the terracotta stake? Isn't the theory that oxygen released when the soil absorbs water will go up into the bottle, forcing more water out? I trust that some function is served; I just don't understand it!

I like this idea! Probably need to get some more house plants to go with the wine bottles ~

Sure beats the tacky blue and red glass globes they sell on infomercials for this same purpose.
