Jim needs some help deciphering what's best for the environment...
Dear Re-nest,
This has been bugging me for awhile: dishwasher vs. hand washing dishes. Which one is more environmentally-friendly and better for overall water use, energy, soap, etc...?
Thanks,
Jim

I feel much better using a newer energy-efficient dishwasher. According to my manual, it uses 3.5 gallons for the economy/delicate cycle, which I almost always use. I don't think I could possibly use that little water washing that many dishes by hand. It also uses $24-$37 per year in electricity, depending on your water heater, assuming 4 loads per week. Of course, there are many earth-friendly detergents, as well. I use the Trader Joe's brand, which is less expensive than some other brands.

I like (but question validity of) this infograph from Good Magazine, which visualizes virtual and direct water consumption:
http://www.good.is/post/transparency-how-much-water-do-you-use/
It claims that hand washing uses about 20 gallons of water, whereas Energy Star dishwashers use about 4 gallons. This of course doesn't take into account electricity use or practicing better hand washing techniques (which I would love to hear, as I don't have a dishwasher in my apartment).

I like hand washing the dishes better. We have a dishwasher however it seems like it uses too much water. It is an energy star dishwasher. So now I just use it to store my books in.

I used to think hand washing was the greener thing to do, but after much research, I've concluded using a dish washer is actually more efficient.
I do still hand wash good cookware and knives, though, to protect them so they last longer.
