Good Question: Eco-Friendly Upholstery Fabric?

We love DIYs, and Maria needs help finding some great eco-friendly upholstery fabrics:

Dear Re-nest,

I got a great antique wingback chair off Craigslist, and I'm hoping to reupholster it myself. I'd a bright, beautiful fun pattern — something to really catch the eye &mdash but I'd also like it to be an eco-friendly fabric. (Organic, sustainably made, etc.) Can you give me some recommendations for eco-friendly upholstery-quality fabrics? Is there a certain designer, store, or website that specializes in this? Please ask your readers to give their recommendations, too.

Maria, when it comes to fabric, we always hit up Etsy first. There are a TON of great fabric stores carrying a wide selection of organic and/or eco-friendly fabrics. Make sure to check out vintage fabrics on Etsy and eBay as well, because using vintage fabric that's been sourced from old clothes, furniture and housewares is another way to be "green" in your upholstery project.

Both Rubie Green and Mod Green Pod offer a small but lovely collection of organic upholstery fabrics. Live Textiles carries organic cotton, hemp, linen and bamboo fabric suitable for light upholstery projects, and Harmony Art has totally fun organic cotton prints. If you change your mind about the bright pattern, O EcoTextiles provides luxurious upholstery fabrics in mild, soothing earth colors.

Not necessarily eco fabric but still green-ish (because you are using something that already exists) is it use old blankets. I've done this many times with old sun-bleached blankets or crazy coverlets from the '60s.
