Corynne needs some advice on how to update and restore this beautiful vintage table set... in a way that's suitable for her eco-aware boyfriend!

Dear Re-nest,

I'm a huge fan of Apartment Therapy... My green-minded boyfriend recently remodeled his apartment with mostly reclaimed materials. We found this very old table and chairs at Housing Works, and while we love the set, they definitely need some work.

Do you have any suggestions for modernizing this sweet tea-set table with leaves and its four matching chairs? (I was inspired by the sweater upholstery seat covers.) We would like to refinish the top wood and repaint/refinish the body of the table and chairs ... not to mention finally completely the project of finishing the apartment!

Thanks so much for considering our dilemma.

Best,
Corynne

Table dimensions:
39" in diameter (without leaves).
Height 29"

Each leaf is (39" x 13") and there are four.

if you paint matte-black all the wood it will let the lines of the furniture shine undistracted by the not-so-great current finish - it'll have that modern/classic feel. You could paint the chairs a different color so it doesn't get too goth, and cover the cushions to match, so there isn't too much going on. good luck.

Personally I think they are beautiful and quirky. Can you just sand and restore them to their original finish? The only thing I would do is maybe stain it something slightly darker.

In regards to painting furniture (something I've been wanting to do to my very dated and ugly set) does anyone have any tutorials or tips or advice on what type of paint/materials to use? On something with such high traffic, I'd think you'd need to use some sort of sealant so the paint isn't constantly getting scratched? Thoughts?
