How To Dispose of Old Makeup?
Good Question

old-makeup.jpgQ: I was recently cleaning out my medicine cabinet, and I have a whole bunch of old makeup (as in, years old) that I know is way past its shelf life. Some of the products are not necessarily eco-friendly and/or biodegradable, so I'm wondering how I should dispose of them? I don't just want to throw them out because I've read that the chemicals can leach into the ground and the water system.

What are my options for safely disposing of my old makeup?

I'd say just chuck it. It can't be that toxic if you're wearing it without ill effects, after all.

While it may not help in the long run, I'm an artist that uses a lot of old make up in my paints for tinting and such. That's how I get rid of old make up.

Very good question! I think the short answer is to call your local hazardous waste station and ask them.

Origins will take your old makeup tubes, jars, bottles (all brands) to recycle: http://www.origins.com/about/index.tmpl?page=recycle

Origins only takes empty containers.

Lily, I think Ms. Pants (great nickname!) has a good suggestion: call haz-waste and ask. How about a report back when you're doine? :)

"Doine." Oh, the spelling ignominy!
