Reader April wrote us with a question that we've been thinking about lately, too:
I am looking for a non-slip mat to put in our tub which is not made of vinyl, and does not off-gas all the horrible smells that usually accompany them. Any suggestions?

We did some basic Googling, and came up with a few resources for PVC-free non-slip mats.

At VitaFutura, we found PVC-Free Rubber Safety Mats, made of non-chlorinated natural rubber--not unlike the eco-wise rubber found in these dog toys.

Further Googling kept pointing us back to the same site for PVC-free natural rubber bathmats. Natural rubber does not off-gas. We also found these non-slip strips, which seem to be healthier for household use than vinyl mats.

Anyone else have a suggestion?

My grandma's "old fashioned" solutions keep coming to mind these days as completely sensible. Case in point: she would spread a towel in the tub before filling it whenever one of the tinier of us was going to take a bath. Extremely non-slip!

Hello, I'm the one who submitted the question. Thank you so much for your help! One of those mats will work perfectly.
