Joan, who is in Chicago, wants help finding a more stylish and energy efficient fireplace enclosure:
I am looking for a new front and door to the fireplace....whatever that is
called. There's a really bad draft around the fireplace.
Dear Joan,
You're not the only one with a drafty fireplace. AT:LA reader Beecham had some great suggestions. What you're looking for is an airtight enclosure. Beecham recommends Diamond W Products online, and it seems to be a good resource.
We think this Cast Black Frame with Swedish Iron doors would suit your style:

or, Photoshopped into the room:

If you're not much of a DIYer, head over to your local fireplace store.
As several AT:LA readers pointed out, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have the damper checked, too. We're just surprised Angelenos know so much about fireplaces!
Readers, what's your call? Which fireplace enclosure is the best for Joan?
I once had a chimney sweep guy tell me to stuff newspaper up the flue when I'm not using the fireplace. It's worked well, but if you actually use the thing it might be hard to remember.

Bad advice - if someone ever uses that fireplace, that's a chimney fire waiting to happen!
Just close the damper...

Take a look on ebay and craigslist. My dad just found a very cool, minimal steel and glass fireplace door on ebay for a good deal.
I second the closed damper to prevent drafts.

Holy crap, that's OUR fireplace! And yes, it is very drafty and rattles.... Love the shell balls in the vase on top.
