Josh just picked up this vinyl couch and wants to refinish it. He asked for our help:

Suggestions for colors? I was thinking a deep, hot-rod red. The room it's in and the majority of my furniture have the following color scheme: gray, black-brown, white, stainless steel - some green.

We're also wondering if you have any suggestions for a greener alternative to vinyl refinishing spray. (Slipcovers, well, slip, on vinyl and leather so they're not the best option.)

The refinishing spray in question is similar to this product by Dupli-Color. (Essentially, it's spray paint that's designed to chemically bond to the surface of clean vinyl.) And, while all we can think of when someone says "paint" and "couch" in the same sentence is that fateful episode of Trading Spaces where Hilde decided to paint two ugly couches pink, rendering them both uglier and impossible to use, vinyl refinishing spray does actually work. If we don't come up with any greener alternatives, we'll grant Josh a spray paint pass in recognition of keeping this couch out of the landfill for a bit longer.

Dang...that turquoise is pretty hot!!! Sorry, I have no suggestions. I just wanted to say it's HOT and good luck.

I am also a fan of the turquoise, although in your color scheme description it does sound like some bright red would really make it pop!

This is perhaps an out-there suggestion, but maybe there is an eco friendly spray -- not necessarily meant for furniture -- a natural latex maybe -- that you could spray the vinyl with so that you could use slip covers and they wouldn't slip?

"If you can't beat them, join them" I think the cliche' might work in this instance. The turquoise could be minimized with the right accent pieces. You wouldn't be adding chemicals to the sofa.

Graphic fabric pillows of different shapes, with the right lamps, side tables and chairs could give the sofa a nice funky look.

Just a thought.

The best colour to make a turquoise couch is turquoise! Embrace the colour and just add varying black scatter cushions to tie it in to the rest of your stuff.

[or make some zip-up covers if you must, but please dont paint]

I can see some cracking in the vinyl, which makes it understandable to want to fix/change it. I would first try to reupholster it. There are a lot of sustainable vinyls out there that would really be a good change. Carngie fabrics, Paul Brayton, Maharam. They all have a large selection of vinyls. I would also think that if you go that route then you could also consider a fabric.

I have to weigh in on the side of the turquoise, too -- I love it as-is! I can understand that it's not your style. But...think about it!

i have a similar sofa, without the arms. it was my great aunt's. i absolutely love it. the bottom and back portion (and arms in your sofa) are vinyl and the bottom and back cushions are velvet. it desparately needs reupholstering, but here is a picture of one piece of it (the corner and other piece like this are in the basement.

i think you should keep the turquoise and just get the top and bottom cushions reupholstered (or diy some slip covers) in an orange or neutral.
