Good Question: To-Go Cups for Iced Coffee?

2008_08_28-Cups.jpgReader Fiona writes in with a very practical question. She says, I LOVE iced coffee and make big overnight batches at least once a week. I would love to be able to tote it around in a disposable plastic cup with a lid, similar to what Starbucks uses, but I can't find them anywhere.

I know it's not terribly environmentally friendly, but lifestyle wise, it's what's best for me right now. Do you know where I might be able to buy some? Thx in advance!

Fiona, we can definitely sympathize with the tension between convenience and what seems most "green." A reusable cup would probably be best, but if a disposable really works better for you, then try a compostable corn cup!

We found these compostable corn cups at Branch Home. A 50-pack of 12-ounce cups is $8.

Buy corn cups at Branch Home

The lids are a little harder to find; they usually are sold in much larger quantities. You can get a sleeve of $100 for less than $10, though.

Buy flat corn lids at Biodegradable Store, $6.50 for 100

You can even buy the dome-shaped lids for milkshakes and smoothies!

Buy domed corn lids at Biodegradable Store, $8.75 for 100

We also suggest using a reusable metal bendy straw! Any other suggestions for Fiona?

Not to be rude, but I don't really see how disposable is more convenient...I mean, carrying a cup is the same regardless and a disposable cup is much harder to grip with condensation and more likely to spill/leak while you're "toting it around". And it's cheaper! Is it that you can't hold on to it after it is empty or that you can't wash the cup every day? If its the latter, get more than one reusable cup and wash them once a week when you make the coffee...

just my two cents.

Or what about an old-skool collapsible drinking cup that you can rinse and throw in a bag or purse to take home?

I'm not a fan of corn plastic, it's not all that environmentally friendly. (But you guys just posted about that, too).

You could easily put iced coffee in a stainless steel water type bottle and not need to use anything
disposable at all.....

No coffee place will mind as long as you buy their coffee.....

use a glass jar. i, too, drink iced coffee every day, and transport all my cold drinks this way. i reuse my jars that hold about 12-16ozs with screw lids. i love it. i drink from glass, which for some reason is divine. i walk or take public transport and have never had my jar break or leak.
