Good Question: What Is This Plant?

8_27_2007-mysteryplant.jpgThis week, we're asking for your help:

Have you seen this plant?

AT:Green Home reader Greg writes,

Hi, ATG.

I'm hoping someone can help me find out what this plant is [the tall grass-like one]. If not a positive ID, I'd be happy finding something similar.

Greg, our highly scientific poll of landscape architects revealed that one out of two believe it to be some variety of zea mays,
or corn.

But which variety? We have no idea. Readers, can you help Greg out?

Wow, I guessed right! Corn! No idea what type, but that certainly is an interesting interior idea!

You may also want to look up dwarf coconut palms. They look very much the same when they first start growing. Ikea used to carry them in their garden section.

thanks for narrowing it down to these 2 delicious possibilities. i think the dwarf coconut palm looks closest to the picture, but the corn plant is a very tempting idea. i'm not so sure it would grow indoors, though.
