Ruth sent us a good question: I have 50 year old oak floors that need to be refinished. I've done some research and am very interested in using old-fashioned (and green!) tung oil rather than the lacquers that are the current norm. Have you used tung oil on your floors? What was your experience with the refinishing and maintenance process? It all sounds too good to be true with easy repair of scratches and marks, water resistance and durability!!

When we moved into our current house we called about getting our oak hardwood floors refinished. The person I talked to suggested if I wanted to do it myself (if there weren't any major stains or gouges) I could use tung oil. We used it in the entire house (3 bedrooms) and even if it's "green" the odor is overwhelming until it dries. But it does work great, though didn't fix discolorations in the floor and water stains, and we're going to be selling the house soon and will be doing it all again (needs it again 6 years later).

I know that tung oil is derived from nuts, and people with nut allergies can have severe reactions to it.
