Some of the AT city sites are having fun imagining how they would decorate the Obama White House. Naturally, another question came to mind: How should President-Elect Obama (and Michelle, of course) work on greening the White House -- and, as a result, setting an example for the rest of the world?
If you were in charge, would the White House have a green roof?
We already know that Obama is a little cynical about CFLs ... but we also know he's made some major environmental commitments. So, shouldn't he start by setting an example at home?
We think the first obvious step is solar panels. But, there are a million other possibilities.
What else would you like to see the Obamas do with the White House?

the one that seems obvious to me is turn those lawns into a vegetable garden (i think michael pollan advocated this idea in the nytimes magazine). it would be great if they would get a LEED-EB certification too, to set an example to other old existing buildings. i hardly expect the obamas to be hemp-wearing, canning jar-swilling greenites, but it would be great for them to set an example to the nation.

sorry that i am off topic but what a cool candid picture of the Obama and Biden! May I know the source of that?

unfortunately i'm not sure solar panels would work very well in dc...probably not as cost effective as some other options.

I'm with you on the White House vegetable garden!
A fantastic idea, and that could (should?) be Michelle's charge - educating the American people on the importance of subsistence farming.
What a fantastic thing it would be to serve foreign heads of state fresh produce from The White House Vegetable Gardens.
She could even lead a campaign for every school system in this country to establish and maintain its own farms to furnish food for its cafeterias. It would create local jobs and the School Garden could also be utilized as a coursework, like math or French.

This is the site where you can sign the petition for a White House Organic Farm.
I am torn between highly visible actions that can inspire others to take individual action (certainly a part of any green movement) and larger policy initiatives just to undo the damage done by the Bush administration.
