Green Style: A Swiss Hobbit-Like Underground Home

Move over, Bilbo Baggins. Sometimes you see a home and the design/concept just takes your breath away. That's what we thought when we saw this 'underground' home located in the Swiss village of Vals, and designed by Netherlands architects at SeARCH and Christian Muller Architects. The striking stone house has a magnificent view of the Alpine mountainside through its long elliptical panel of windows, which also looks out onto a large entertaining area. The whole home is beautiful and unusual.

Wow, more light in there than I would expect. Am wondering about moisture - I had a friend whose apartment was half-underground and when it rained worms would come up through his carpet.

Is all that firewood for that one little bedroom stove?

Vals, ski resort town in the Swiss Alps? How does that house work when it's covered in snow? That thing looks like a gaint collecting bowl!

The hobbits might love it, but I doubt that they'd have the income to actually have it built!

too much grey cement, but the idea of it is nice.

My feet get cold just looking at all those bare concrete floors. Surprised at how close to the neighbors the house is - I expected this to be in a much more remote location for some reason.

Beautiful!! I love the multiple levels and the amazing windows!! The patio (for lack of a better word) is perfect!! It appears to provide much more privacy than a typical patio. Excellent ideas! Thanks for sharing it with us!! =)
