Green Style: Katrin's Soul-Warming Home

Our Green Style feature is meant to be an eclectic mix of inspiration for what we think of overall as a "healthy home." Sometimes we show you a home built with green materials top-to-bottom; other times (like today) we show you a home that just gives off good vibes. This home is incredibly warm and cheerful, full of personality. The owner Katrin (known online as Lillian's Diary) has filled her small space with picks from eBay and Etsy, and lives by this motto: "Pare down. Everyone who visits our house asks me where our stuff is. Seriously, you don’t need stuff."

She's also big on going the DIY route if you can't afford something. For more pictures, visit her Flickr page, and check out more photos and read the interview at Decor8.

really cute house. i do see 'stuff' but it looks fine to me. nice and bright.

oh yeah ... any information on the paint colors used here? i really like the pale grey in the kitchen it looks clean and modern with the wood tones on the counter, utensils and spice jars. i would love to find something similar for my new rental.

I'm suspicious. How is a kitchen with exhaust hood that white unless there's no actual cooking going on? Because when you cook some smoke does go up and coat the ceiling. Also, one does not cork the spices one uses all the time, lest one spill some trying to get the cork out. Wasting good spice is a definite foul.

Oh, and more books sorted by color. Sorted by color ... obviously not using them, then ... out they should go!

But the place is cute!

Very sweet and cheerful house. I love the stove with the fold-down top.

This is an adorable house and I could move right in, but they have LOTS of stuff from what I can see. No objections here, just makes me wonder how their friends live?!

I was actually wondering where the spice jars with corks are from. I'm a huge fan of those. I am not sure why you would spill spices taking the cork out. It doesn't seem any more likely to spill than the twist top versions. I know conran's makes something similar- are these from there?

@580sqftofbliss - sorting books by color has nothing to do with their frequency of use. I sort my books this way because I think it's less cluttered looking, and I'm an avid reader (I read about a book a week.) Besides, it's kind of presumptuous to make assumptions about things like how much someone reads, no?

I would also like to know what paint colors were used!

Hi all! Lillian was also an entrant in our 2009 Small Cool contest. Check out her post here. She answers readers' questions in the Comments. Looks like the gray in the living room was a custom mix from Home Depot.

This is a very bright and organized home. The kitchen is very inspiring. I love the color scheme as well.

What a lovely home! It's so bright and welcoming.

I don't think that one's book-sorting method is representative of frequency of use. It's just a sorting method! I also don't understand why removing a cork would result in spice spillage.

I want those glass and white IKEA canisters SO bad, but they don't seem to have a very good air-tight seal. Every time I get to the store I drool over them, but never end up buying! Am I just expecting too much???

Those white ceramic (?) canisters are really cute - but no one could ever remember which one holds which food, right? It would be annoying to have to open six containers every time you wanted flour, sugar, etc. I also can't recognize every spice by look - all the brown powdery ones look pretty much the same! So I would need some labels. But I love the look!

Well, maybe they cleaned the walls for the photoshoot?

Six canisters is not much to remember, especially when they are different sizes. If they always get put back in the same place, anyway! Besides, it's not so hard to pick it up and look - you've got a 50/50 chance! Maybe the spice have labels on the bottom? I'd be more worried that they are open to light and heat from being near the stove - mine are in my current setup and they definitely suffer, flavourwise, although maybe they use them quickly enough that that's not an issue.

It seems to me they have a decent amount of possesions, but not a lot of STUFF, if that distinction is worth anything. Not so many random things that they keep just because - no knick knacks, no duplicate items, no shelves chockablock with items of questionable use.

I also concur with the agreement that sorting method and amount of use are uncorrelated, when it comes to books.

the white ceramic canisters actually have a clear inset in the lid so you can see what's inside!

Hey San Francisco Apartment Therapy readers. I work for a new urban lifestyle magazine here in the city and we are looking for a cool pad to feature in our new publication. Do you think your home is a work of art that the rest of us would appreciate a look at? Then email me and let me know a little about where in the city are you and some of the things you love about your home some photos of course.

Hope to hear from you and see some cool houses!!
