Chill Designs: He Makes Wine. She Recycles The Barrels.

Ron Calvert makes wine in his home winery, located in the Sierra Foothills of Northern California. His wife Candace, meanwhile, decided to recycle the barrels Ron uses for wine making (that have a limited life span) into furniture...

Ron and Candace's small vineyard is literally in their backyard. They've even built a wine cellar into the hillside behind their home. The inspiration for the barrel stave furniture came from a chair they saw on a trip to Oregon.

It was a natural fit for their small home winery operation. After wine barrels are used a certain number of times, they no longer impart their oak flavor and begin to collect bacteria. That's when Candace steps in and turns them into furniture. Utilizing her background in interior design, and with the help of a talented craftsman, her new company sells a line of recycled wine barrel products. Their current line, sold under the name Chill Designs, includes an Adirondack chair, a side table, a bench, and believe it or not, a wine rack.
