While the pipe system may look scary and complicated, evidently it's just large, requiring diligence but not necessarily specialized skill. Of course, there's the matter of pulling up the floor, pouring a concrete sub-floor, and so on, but the article tackles those questions too, suggesting shortcuts and identifying technology that makes the project easier.
Electric in-floor heating mats, for example, are one alternative they offer if you want heated floors but the installation of pipes and a water heater just seems overwhelming.

I have radiant floor heating and it's amazing! My energy bills are so incredibly low in the winter because I don't use my furnace. I find that the radiant heating sets a really comfortable temperature, so I never need to use anything else (aside from a crackling fire on colder days!).
But, with that said, my house is about as perfectly insulated as a house can be, so not a lot of energy escapes. I would be interested to see how efficient and green radiant floor heating is on a poorly-insulated property.
