How to: Make Your Own Stick Deodorant

9-25-2009medicinecab.jpgWe don't usually go for these sorts of at-home science experiments, but this one has our attention. Once you've gotten ever last little bit of deodorant out of its container, then what do you do? Why not fill the container with a homemade deodorant? That's right .... homemade deodorant.

Now we've never tried this at home, but the instructions at Little House in the Suburbs totally intrigue us. All you need to make your own stick deodorant are corn starch, baking soda, tea tree oil, and Lou Anna coconut oil.

Then you just sort of shove the mixture back into your old stick deodorant container.

Get all the instructions here.

Have you ever tried making your own deodorant before, or any other type of "beauty" product? How did it turn out?

Hrm. Well considering I'm very allergic to corn, I can't try this. As it is, I have to be VERY careful about what deoderants I use because of that.

KimberlyM,

Maybe you can substitute another type of starch in place of the corn.

I've totally made my own deodorant and I love it. My recipe used/uses mango butter, shea butter, baking soda, and what ever essential oils you like for a nice smell. Melt equal parts of mango butter and shea butter (or any other butters really work just as well) and then mix in some baking soda and the essential oils you've chosen. Pour into your container of choice and let set. Works really well.

What a fascinating idea. It's basically what Tom's deodorant is anyway!

KimberlyM, what about trying it with potato or rice flour? Potato flour is particularly fine in texture, if I'm remebering it right - certainly starchy!

I use Tom's unscented most of the time but I wonder if it has a use by limit because my current one smells a bit whiffy when I put it on (after I've washed my pits, before you ask!).
When in doubt, I also have a 'rock' deodorant to fall back on.

Might be fun to make my own though...
