How To: Build a Bee House

050409-bee-house.jpg

Bees have made headlines a lot in the past year. (In a nutshell, bee populations are down between 30 and 50 percent worldwide. Kind of a big deal, considering one-third of our food supply comes from plants that depend on bees for pollination.) Without necessarily getting into the gloom-and-doom aspect of the situation with your kids, building a bee house is a great way to teach the lesson that even insects sometimes need protected urban habitats...

The instructions are ridiculously easy, as this video at Yes Mag demonstrates. All you need is a chunk of untreated wood, a drill, some nails and wire, and a shingle for the roof. When you're finished building your bee house, try to orient it so that it faces east, as bees are stimulated by the morning sun.

(For the bee-phobic among you, note that this house is designed to attract very small bees like mason bees, which are not aggressive and don't sting. They also don't make honey, so don't worry that your bee house is going to some day get very, very sticky.)

These houses are a great project, but need annual maintenance to keep them habitable year after year. The information is easy to find, and a bit more than I want to leave in a comment. A great resource is your county agricultural extension office (I'm Canadian and not too sure about the correct term), who probably have a website and maybe even a hotline for gardeners. Have fun building!

Wow! I've been wanting to find out about building bee houses and never thought to look to AT for advice! The New Internationalist magazine devoted a whole issue a few months back, to the declining bee population. I had no idea up until then, of how serious the problem was (I'm sure that it said that in the UK, we've lost 40 percent of our native bees). Now I can look forward to building some houses with the kids at work, although I won't be showing them the video ..... I'm a great believer in clamping things down firmly!!!

Thanks for highlighting this post again!
