Good Questions: Worms Resource for Compost?

Dear Re-nest,

After your recent roundup of various composters and compost tools, I am re-inspired to make my own compost even better — but I am having trouble finding worms! I have the green MIO composter from Target. Any suggestions for worms? Many thanks.

You'll want red wigglers - Eisenia fetida. The best thing would be to get it from a local grower, and you might try googling "vermiculture red wiggler order [your location]" or "worm composting order [your location]" to see what comes up. You can try bait and tackle shops or local garden centers (call ahead and ask for red wigglers). It takes a little sleuthing and if you are not sure you're looking at the right thing online, just call!

Or if you're near Milwaukee, you could go to a vermiculture workshop at Growing Power and pick up a bucket of worms then. Unfortunately I don't think they sell to "just anyone." http://www.growingpower.org/worms1.htm
