7 Home Improvements That Could Save You $1,500 in 2010

home_improvements.jpg

Lucrative federal tax incentives are set to expire at the end of 2010, meaning that this is the year to do some of those home improvements you've been putting off. In most cases, the government will cover 30% of the cost reimbursed at tax time (up to $1,500) if you choose energy efficient equipment that meets the specified standards and codes.

Note: It'd be good to try and do most of these yourself, since the government will not reimburse for the cost of labor. Make sure to also check out the database of state incentives, a comprehensive source of information on state, local, utility, and federal incentives and policies that promote renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Here are some things you can do this year to get a tax credit:

  1. Get an Energy Audit
  2. Re-Insulate
  3. Replace Old Windows
  4. Replace an Old Appliance
  5. Re-Roof
  6. Plan to Install a Solar Water Heater
  7. Install a Smart Meter
