Latex Pillows: Any Experience?

8-27-09pillow.jpg

Recently I've been suffering from a nighttime cough that comes on after about 30 minutes after hitting the sack. My fiancee thinks it might be dust mites in my beloved down pillow which I've had for a couple years. Another green blog recently posted about latex pillows which are naturally resistant to common germs, dust mites, mildew and mold. Has anyone had any experience with these?

I am an incredibly picky when it comes to my pillows. Once I find one I like (generally a soft down), I'll keep it for years. Ecofabulou's blog post on Nature's Rest latex pillows has me seriously intrigued by this relatively pricey pillow, but I want to ensure it would be comfortable and address my recent coughing issues.

Does anyone have any experience with natural latex pillows? Or even ways to put night coughing...er...to bed?

Yes, I have one and it is fantastic! I have not had any problems with waking up in the night unable to breathe or feeling stuff up in the morning. They are also extremely comfortable and I have had no more neck pain since switching to one.

If you are interested we bought ours from Sleep country and we were allowed to return it as long as the plastic was not taken off. So we had the opportunity to try them and return them if they were not suitable.

The other great thing about the pillow is that you can get a 5 year warrenty with it if you buy the pillow protector.

Good luck and I hope this helped

Pennyk, that's a great recommendation, thank you!

Before getting this pillow did you have problems breathing / stuffy?

Thanks for commenting.

If you think your problem is dust mites, I would recommend getting a new pillow of the type you like and a low-allergen case. These fit under your normal pillow case, the good ones are virtually undetectable and VERY helpful.

I, as a person with allergies, would be hesitant about the latex pillow. I had been mildly allergic to dust for years. I got a latex foam bed when I went to graduate school and 3-4 years later had developed significant problems with latex. I had to get rid of the bed, and now can't use rubber bands, eat bananas and kiwi (relatives of latex), be around latex balloons etc. So, I'd stick with what you know.

ttbj,

Yes I have had some problems in the past with waking up all stuffy and sometimes unable to breathe at night. The pillow protector that we bought with our pillows is the kind that the other poster was taking about. They are only $30 (canadian) and we had to buy them with the latex pillow to get the warrenty. They are not noticable at all when you sleep on them. You could always just give the case a try first to see if it helps you, maybe the $30 protecor is all you need. Personally you couldn't pay me enough to part with my new latex pillow

Why buy a new pillow? A breathable allergen-barrier pillow cover costs, like, $6 at any big-box retailer.
