Solar Insect Zapper: Using the Sun to Zap Bugs

solar-insect-zapper.jpg

Spending time in your backyard or on your patio is great... until the mosquitoes come out. Even with Citronella candles and bug spray, it can feel like a losing battle. So we're intrigued by these Solar Insect Zappers. They charge themselves all day and then turn on at dusk, at which point the UV light purportedly lures and then zaps mosquitoes and other insects with a 300-volt electric charge...

They apparently take 8 hours to charge and last for eight hours. You can even switch them from zappers to ambient light. A set of four is available from Hammacher Schlemmer for $99.95.

Has anyone ever used these? How do they work? Let us know!

Hearing bugs gets zapped always ruins a peaceful evening for me. I would rather light a lot of candles and try my best to last as long as possible.

Has anyone had success with an ultrasonic repeller machine?

How about emptying out stagnant containers of water so that the mosquitoes don't breed? The idea of killing bugs in their home ( the outdoors ) doesn't sit well with me. Citronella just makes them go away. It doesn't kill them.

I have no problem killing mosquitoes, but I don't like bug zappers. The noise is a little unsettling. My preferred solution is to plant mosquito-repelling plants all around the patio. Right now I have catnip growing in hanging baskets. Supposedly it repels mosquitoes as well as spray-on repellents.

Bug zappers, like all indiscriminate insect killers, kill helpful or predatory bugs along with any pests you hope to kill. Mosquitoes are attracted to CO2, not light particularly, so what you'll probably kill a lot of is moths.
