Affordable, Green Housing in Oakland: Ironhorse

1-12-2010ironhorse.jpgThe Ironhorse at Central Station is a 99-unit affordable housing unit in Oakland, Ca. It's a beautiful, solar-powered apartment complex designed for people who are earning up to 50 percent of area median income. We love it.

The complex has one-two-and three-bedroom "green" apartments for individuals and families who aren't usually able to afford green.

Ironhorse at Central Station has solar power, solar water heating collectors, a vegetated green roof, private decks, and individual vegetable gardens for residents. And, in an effort to revitalize the general neighborhood, the street adjacent to the building has been reconstructed to include a park and other pedestrian-friendly amenities.

The place is currently taking applications. We'll be so excited to check it out next time we're in Oakland.

I know where those are. It kind of feels like nowheresville when you drive through. I hope the revitalization efforts pay off.
