As an resident of Los Angeles, seeing
2012, the latest end-of-the-world disaster film, last night was a little...well...it's kinda disturbing to watch as the city you live in and know intimately crumbles and falls into the sea. Suddenly, earthquake warnings take on a whole new meaning. Maybe, instead of relying on a big government-built ark, we should think about one of our own? Then we remembered something similar we'd seen in Florida.
The Cosmic Muffin is a houseboat that began life as a plane, a 1930's Boeing Stratoliner owned by Howard Hughes with an interior designed by Raymond Loewy (with a little help from Rita Hayworth) that, with its pressurized cabin was able, at the time, to go higher than any other aircraft. In order to turn it into a boat, the wings and tail were cut off. Electrical, plumbing, sanitation and air conditioning systems were installed along with a new interior that included restored chairs and bar. For more information, click here.
