apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Family of Three, 380 Square Feet
Los Angeles Times

11-17-2009360ft.jpgIt's one thing to live in a 140-square-foot house.

It's another thing to live in a 380-square-foot house with your partner and your 9-month old son (and a dog).

But that's what Kelly Breslin, Ryan Conder, and their son Thurston are doing right now in Los Angeles.

The house has no bedroom, and the couple doesn't even own a crib—they practice co-sleeping. Our favorite line in the article is a quote from Breslin about all the "stuff" people assume you need when you have a baby.

"We are trying to be conscientious about the choices we make," she says. "People tell you you need all this stuff for a baby. All you really need is diapers, a place to change him and boobs."

What's amazing about their 380-square-foot home is that, from the pictures, it looks uncluttered, cozy, and well-designed. They make it look easy.

But we wonder how old Thurston will be before he starts asking for his own room?

"Diapers, a place to change him, and boobs"? The best quote ever!

We, a family of four plus Frida our dog, lived and loved in a 550 sq. ft. apartment for four years! Now in a 3,000 sq. ft. home I miss my family. (We all have our own rooms-it's sad!)

I've lived in my 500 sq foot apartment for 10 years now. I've added a husband and a son, who is now almost 6! Kids love the coziness. My son never asked for his own room. Last year we had to bring it up to him like "How would you like it if we turned this back room into a bedroom for you?! Your very own!" His answer was the equivalent of "Meh". It's only an 8x5 room but it turned out sooo cute. I feel all panicky when I think of the day he's going to outgrow his custom built, 5 foot long loft bed. I don't think I'll want a much bigger house. I'd get lonely. I hear ya Sugar!
