In Michigan City, Indiana a community called Tryon Farm has taken a green approach to development, preserving more than two thirds of the 170-acre farm as prairie, dunes, woods, and restored wetlands. Homes are designed by various architects, many of them members of CAPA (Chicago Associates Planners and Architects). Homes range from $168,000 to $488,000 including land.

Houses are clustered together to preserve open spaces. Settlements are located in the farmstead, woods, and on the pond, with new homes being built in other clustered areas.
One-third of the residents are full-time, while two thirds own vacation homes. There's also a Bed and Breakfast for weekend visitors to the farm and a blog with photos of life on the farm.
