Inspiration: Katie Thompson's Suitcase Seating

We're always drawn to creative green designs that incorporate the old with the new, but the imaginative work of Cape Town designer, Katie Thompson, is something special. Her work blends the romantic and nostalgic with the practical and current for a fresh and whimsical vibe.

Katie started her design business, REcreate, earlier this year in Cape Town with the mission of "striv[ing] for the unconventional and unique in every project." In addition to offering interior design services, she's also put out an inventive array of re-imagined home products created from old and discarded items.

We were particularly taken with her seating line. Vintage suitcases make a comfy comeback as whimsical occasional chairs and settees. The cases have been reinforced with an internal steel structure and plush cushions.

To learn more about Katie and her designs, check out REcreate's website.

Great idea. It looks surprisingly comfortable! It seems like a great project to try making yourself, since shipping from Cape Town might offset the environmental benefits of reusing a suitcase...
