apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Inspiration: Salvaging the Bay Bridge
San Francisco Chronicle

1-12-2010bridge.jpgThose who live in the California Bay Area are probably aware that the eastern span of the Bay Bridge is set to be replaced by a new and improved section. But what happens to that old span once it becomes obsolete? Demolition?

Some students at the UC Berkeley College of Environmental Design have a few alternative ideas. As a project for one of their design classes, students reimagined what the bridge could become once it's no longer being used for cars crossing between San Francisco and the East Bay.

While we're not entirely sure we'd feel comfortable living in an apartment that hangs off the bridge over the bay (earthquakes!), we're still totally impressed by the creativity of some of these ideas.

One student proposes building a hotel off the end of the iconic structure (pictured above), while another imagines pedestrian walkways and shops lining both sides of the defunct bridge. And, although none of these ideas will probably see the light of day, it wasn't a totally far-fetched idea—other designers had discussed ways to reuse the bridge.

it would be incredible to see the bridge salvaged and turned into something new for SF to enjoy!

I really hope the old span is repurposed. Although, watching it be demolished would be quite the spectacle.

New thought: I hope they strap a bunch of timed charges to it so I can watch it topple into the bay! Sweet, sweet revenge for all those miserable hours I've spent on it.
