Inspiration: Uplifting Communities Through Design
Austin

022309uplift-03.jpg We all realize how bright colors, live plants and fun spaces can be inspiring and invigorating in our own homes. They can be especially effective when used in community spaces that really need enlivening, like inner-city schools. One program in Austin is seeking to do just that: brighten up school spaces and uplift the community! More after the jump...

022309uplift-02.jpg Uplift Austin is a program offered as a daytime course in Austin's most impoverished high schools. By matching teams of design professionals and college students in the fields of landscape design, interior design, green building and public art with a high school committed to improving its campus, students are introduced to sustainable design and their schools are refreshed with color and plants. Every building will be retrofitted to be energy and water efficient as well. Along with bettering their high school environments, students also learn about green career fields and sustainable living practices that they can take with them after graduation. You can learn how to get involved by visiting their website.

the pictures shown seem to be images of some great mid-century modern architecture that would not at all be served well by painting them all those visually disturbing colors. Please think about complementing the simplicity of the architecture would subdued thoughtful simplicity in the choice of materials, design moves, landscaping, plantings etc.
