Outdoor Showers

9_8_2008-shower.jpgA friend of ours came back from a weekend away raving about the rejuvenating effects of an outdoor shower...

...and we couldn't agree more. Plus, when you're outdoors, the water from your shower can be put to use for irrigation—just be sure to choose biodegradable soaps and shampoos and steer clear of anything antibacterial.

A couple of our favorite outdoor showers:

  • Above, the modern teak and stainless steel Waterfall Shower from Jane Hamley Wells; $3100.
  • We found a more curvilinear and private take on the outdoor shower in a video at This Old House. It uses a custom shop-made steel frame covered with cedar fence pickets.

I've built a couple of outdoor showers out of 13mm garden irrigation pipe and spray nozzles. They're easy to put together and great for cooling off on a hot day. At some stage I'll get around to making a solar heater out of the same pipe so my family can enjoy a warm shower too when they want to.
