LEDs not CFLs are the Bulbs of the Future
The New York Times 5.11.09

LEDs ("Light-Emitting Diodes") have long played second fiddle to CFLs, but according to The New York Times the lighting industry is looking to LEDs to "light" the way for the future. (No pun intended. Okay, pun intended.) The only LEDs you might currently know are the ones blinking out from your alarm clock, but they're actually very versatile. Industry experts say that LEDs last longer than incandescent and CFLs, can be made into many shapes and sizes, give off a more natural-looking light, and as an added bonus, contain no mercury...

As of this coming fall, major lighting manufacturers like Osram, Lighting Science and Philips will introduce new 25,000-hour LED lamps that look just like traditional bulbs and produce the same amount of light, but at just 8 watts of electricity.

We can't say we have any LED light bulbs at home, but now we're anxious to try them out. We use CFLs, although we've never really been thrilled with the light they give off. Maybe LEDs will be better. We can only hope!

I'd totally go for LEDs over CFLs. Heck, I'll go for incandescents over them. It's hard to call something environmentally friendly when they're filled with mercury. I certainly hope they look more traditional than the curly CFLs. I almost want to say that CFLs are as dangerous as they are ugly.

This is really awesome. I'd love to have LEDs more readily available on the market.
