Mason Jar Lanterns from Alyssa Ettinger

balljarlights.jpg

When we first saw Alyssa Ettinger's newest design, the Mason Jar Lanterns, we thought they were so pretty. The jars are made of porcelain and hand-cast in Brooklyn in molds made from antique mason jars. Handles are thin wire, wrapped by hand, and perfect for hanging. Just put in a votive candle and watch it glow...

Lanterns come in two designs, and retail for $55 each (sets are $90). Read more about Alyssa Ettinger's work at her website, and purchase these lights from her Etsy shop.

These are absolutely lovely -- but a big YIKES at the price! Also, I will admit, I don't see what makes these any greener than any other candle holder, though I can appreciate supporting a local artist...if she happens to be local to your area.

Personally, I'd gladly pick up an actual old Mason jar at a junk sale or consignment shop (recycling!), give it a good rinse, and use it as a candle holder. If I really wanted the opaque white look, there are certainly paints (even environmentally sound ones) that I could dunk the jar in.

Nice look, nice idea. But a bit pricey.
