Look! Upcycled Music Stand
What's It Made From?

10_21_09_cello.jpgBefore a recent trip home to pick vegetables, my mom (and as I've said before, my green hero) told me excitedly over the phone about a new music stand that her husband made for her. But when she explained just what he'd made it with, I was confused. There was no way it could be beautiful, I thought, let alone fit in with her home's decor...

When she told me about it, the words she used were "TV armoire" and "plant stand" and "gorgeous." (I imagined a TV-sized wooden box on top of a concrete pedestal.)

Doesn't sound like much, does it? But as you can see, it did in fact turn out gorgeous. As she's learned to play the cello, she made do with a decades-old flimsy metal music stand. She wanted something nicer, but didn't like the ridiculously high price of new wooden stands that would match her home (they started at $200, not to mention they were likely made from unsustainable wood). So, ingenuity set in and they went on the hunt for pieces that could be creatively reused.

The wooden plant stand was found at home; it had grown worse for the wear at the top, but could be lopped off at an angle for the music stand. The solid piece for holding the music was inspired during a trip to the thrift shop. In a pile of junk sat two doors from a TV armoire, which the shop sold for under a dollar ("Nobody's going to do anything with those!"). A little measuring, cutting, and nailing later, and the finished result became the perfect home for a cellist's music.

What do you think?
