Hobbit House in Wales
San Francisco Chronicle

5-22-2009ba-hobbit_front_05.jpgLovers of J.R. Tolkien should really get a kick out of this home, built into a hillside in Wales. It's about as "Hobbity" as a house can get, and it's full of surprises ...

The home is naturally insulated, has a green roof (obviously), solar panels, and a wood-burning stove. It was constructed from stones, mud, scrap wood, straw bales and lime plaster. The owner, Simon Dale, built the house with his father-in-law — it took them about 1,500 hours, and cost very little.
