Look! Another Grass-Free Yard

5_8_2008-nograss.jpgThis is a front yard we pass on our morning walk. When the grass came out and these plants went in, we were more than a little skeptical. There just didn't seem to be enough, and the planting scheme was overly formal for our taste.

But now that it's growing in, it's delightful.

5_8_2008-nograss2.jpgWe are certainly not experts on plants, but we're fairly sure the perimeter is (or is closely related to) a succulent called semper vidum. As for the rest of the plants, we'll leave that to you, dear readers.

There's a sprinkler system rigged up, so this certainly isn't a water-free garden, but we're guessing it requires less than an equivalent patch of grass.

Great looking yard! We've been trying to decide how to address the lawn-watering situation we have (being in a pre-drought area!). This type of arrangement of plants would be beautiful!

I just bought my first home, and the yard has zero grass. It is all underbrush plants and a few winding pea gravel paths. I only saw the house in late fall and winter and I thought that I might have to do some major landscapeing work to liven up the yard. Now that spring is rolling in, albiet slowly, I have tone of flowers from dafodils to daisyis and ferns and a whole bunch more that I do not even know 'cause I am not a flower person. It is really cool though because my wife and I call it our surprise.
