We were super excited when we saw these $1.99 "candles" at Walgreens. Our first thought: finally there's an affordable alternative to the rechargeable Oxo Candela lights we've been ogling for months...

Here's a similar product available online from Walgreens. But before you click "add to cart," consider this: these cheapies use those little button batteries, the type that power a watch. And the display that we thought at first glance said "rechargeable" actually reads "replaceable." As in: when the battery gives out, chuck the whole thing away and buy a new one. (Those button batteries often cost more than $2 anyway, so it would be the economic, if not ecological, thing to do.)
Aargh. Guess we'll hold out for the $70 Candela DemiGlow set of four. Or perhaps we'll just stick to real candles for now.
Lame. I have no problem finding green candles... they turn up at the thrift store all the time, apparently from people who buy them to display but don't burn them. Obviously it would be greener if they didn't buy them in the first place, but as I am powerless to stop them, I am happy to display and burn their old candles.

Yeah, fake candles are right up there (er, down there) with fake plants.

fake candles have they're place. I'm buying some for an impending trip to the hospital to have my baby and I HATE the florescent lights they have everywhere but they don't allow open flames (which makes sense), and you also can't use their outlets (usually all taken up by hospital equipment).
Other places where they might be useful:
Dorm rooms
Hostel stays when traveling
In your home is love candles but tend to fall asleep with them still burining

I disagree with fake candles being as bad as fake plants. Ok fine, the flame is fake but the lighting effect is real, and in decent enough flameless candles it looks just about as good. Sure its not perfect, but on the bright side there's really no chance flameless candles will cause you to lose everything you have and/or die in a horrific fire that takes your whole family and neighbors along with you.
Fake plants are useless and fugly.
