Remember our quiet little avocado pit from Gardening Month? Almost 2 months later and it's ready to plant! Really, we probably could have jumped on that planting train a wee-bit earlier, but look at it! It's gorgeous!

Heeding the sad news that most trees won't produce fruits, we quickly gobbled up a few more avocados and got the pits going....It may take a while for the fruit to appear but, by golly, our retirement years are sure to be filled with fresh guacamole!

I used to do this all the time with my mom when I was a kid! Thanks for reminding me I'm totally going to do this with my daughter.

Another fun thing for kids: if you put the tops of trimmed carrots into a bit of water, the tops will sprout greens again. Unfortunately the carrot won't root, but for a few weeks it makes a very pretty little fern-like plant.

I've also entertained young relatives with sprouting seeds on a bit of wet towel. All ideas out of an old book -- I think it was 'Gardening for the Purple Thumb.'

My childhood avocado tree lasted for years- until I went away to college and my mom stopped watering it.

I can't never get them to last longer than 2 months. Once I pot them, they die

We had one that lived around 10 years (it was "retired" when we did a big remodel project and it took up too much room in the entry stairs). It survived several repottings and grew to be about 5 feet tall. The leaves were big- like tobacco, and caterpillars & aphids LOVED it. We were always having to pluck invaders off of it. It was a burden- we felt responsible for it, but it was terribly unattractive.
