Pedestrian Paths

7_30_2008-pedestrian3.jpgWe had one of those mornings that makes you feel glad to be alive: breakfast with an old friend, then a leisurely walk home. We're growing to appreciate Berkeley's network of pedestrian paths—they make walking so much more pleasant.

There are miles and miles of pedestrian paths in Berkeley, especially in the more hilly neighborhoods. But it's not only a Berkeley thing. We're starting to see pedestrian paths in new developments, such as one we spotted from the plane in Denver that linked a cul-de-sac with the strip mall next door. Little things like this can make a real impact on how walkable a neighborhood is, and on how much you pollute. If it's more pleasant to walk, and a more direct route, why hop in the car?

It's so much more relaxing to walk on these paths than on busy streets choked with car exhaust. They can be a bit creepy after dark, though.

If you're interested in exploring your city on foot, a recent update to Google Maps will give you directions that take advantage of pedestrian paths. There's a great walking map of Berkeley. If you know of a walking map for your city or town, let us know.
