apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Plastic Bag in the Tree

0319_bag1.jpg

No! Last week's wind storm in Montreal blew a plastic grocery bag into our tree. The bag is impaled on a limb and doesn't look like it's going anywhere...

It's in full view from our apartment, but definitely isn't reachable from the window. So, what are we left to do? We don't really see a way to remove the bag - have any readers out there dealt with this before? It's a real eyesore having trash in the tree, and we would remove it if we could just figure out how... One more reason to use cloth over plastic. Photo: Vincent Cobb

You're going to need a broom, a wire hanger, and some duct tape. If you have a ladder, it'd probably be extra helpful.

Bend the wire hanger as straight as you can, curving the hook on the end so that it'll stand parallel with the ground. Tape it to the end of your broom.

Gently ease it up between the branches until the hook is near the back and do a quick swap bag-wards to hook. Pull! The bag SHOULD come off the edge of the branch and/or tear so that you can pull it down.

You could cut down the tree.

(By the way, this tactic also works with baby's bathwater.)

We have one stuck in our tree, too. Sad.

It's been there for a couple of months...it's s-l-o-w-l-y breaking down and the wind blows bits and pieces away.

Good luck - hope yours comes down faster than ours.

Ughh.. We had one in a tree close to our house when we moved in. 5 years later the tree was trimmed and it finally came down. 5 years of snow, thunderstorms and one tornado... I hope you can reach yours because they take forever to break down. :(

Bend a piece of wire hanger into a grappling hook, and make an eye at the other end with some sharp-nosed pliers. Tie a spool of twine to the eye, and then throw the hook at the bag. It helps to pretend you are Batman.
