Reflective Roofing

7_14_2008_rooftop.jpgA crazed raccoon dug a hole in our aging roof last week. We had been waiting as long as possible before replacing the roof, but now we've got to take action.

We're doing research into our options, but no matter what type of roofing we choose, one simple thing will make it more green: choosing the color with the climate in mind. In places where the heater is running most of the year, darker colors can make more sense: you get free heat from the sun. But in warmer climates, a reflective roof can cut your energy bill from 10 to 60% compared to a non-reflective roof. The less insulation in your attic, the more you benefit from a reflective roof.
