06-29-09fplogo.jpgOverwhelmed at the idea of joining a CSA? Partnering with local sustainable farms, Chicago-based Fresh Picks brings organic food to your doorstep every week without the commitment…

Unlike a typical CSA that can sometimes deliver more than you can eat, Irv & Shelly’s Fresh Picks offers a seasonal food box in three different sizes: single, double and family. They also offer a special box with all the ingredients for an included recipe. Want something that’s not in the box? It’s no problem with Fresh Picks; orders can be customized and out of season produce can be added. Fresh Picks also offers more than just produce - add in meat, eggs, milk or even prepared foods and baked goods to finalize your order.

Packing Up the Boxes

Not sure what to do with some of the unusual produce that comes with the order? Fresh Picks boxes always come with recipes and fresh food tips – there’s also a ton of resources online and links to the farmers websites.

Deliveries are weekly, or bi-weekly, and no commitment is necessary. Fresh Picks comes highly recommended from several friends – we just ordered our first box, and we’ll let you know how it goes!

I did a CSA last season and switched to Fresh Picks this year. It's been a dream! Not *quite* as direct a farm-to-table connection, but definitely easy and convenient.

I wish they had something like this in my area. I just don't have the money to pay for a CSA upfront, even though I know it saves a lot in the long run.

Boston Organics does something similar in Boston. My husband and I have been getting their small fruit box every other week since January. It's wonderful.

I've been using freshpicks for a couple of years and love it! Best part is that you can change or cancel your order up to 3 days before delivery.

Does anyone know of a similar service for the outer boroughs of NYC? I'm part of a CSA and love it, but my mother is disabled and can't do the traveling or volunteering required for participation. Still, she wants to be involved in local foods and supporting farmers. Thanks!

Thanks @MaryWynn! Growing Power is an amazing company. I live in Minneapolis but whenever I visit family in Milwaukee I try to stock up on their products at local coops. Now I'll be doing this before I drive down!

Fresh Picks is fantastic---the produce is always in great condition, and the drivers are super friendly! I'll miss them when I move to Minneapolis this fall.

Any recommendations for CSAs in the Indianapolis area? It looks like there are many options, but I don't know how to pick one over the other!
