My Great Outdoors: Trent's Pretty Planter Boxes

Type of space: 2nd floor deck
Tell us about your outdoor project and how you enjoy it: What started out as a spare time idea (if there is such a thing) has become an obsession. Last fall I built the planter box on the deck railing, anxiously awaited spring and in March 2009 planted the first of many (and more to come) herbs and vegetables. As the first planter started to bud I was sawing and nailing any scraps of wood I could scrounge. Topping out at six planters — with one more to come — we can now see green out the back kitchen door. Pretty handy when you need a handful of herbs...

How did you create it?
Mitre saw, nail gun, screwdriver tape measure and a few notebook sketches.

Recommended store, site, product or resource?
Local home improvement store — and I do mean local. No big box, please.

Very cool and promising, I would enjoy my time a lot if visiting :) It is my experience that gardens, small or big, have the power to grow as a seed, into a rather large tree project- and time-wise, but at least they deliver so much more joy back, and in your case, herbs and veggies, too. I also like your choice of flowering plants. Both calla lilies and Mexican marigolds can be quite happy and sturdy with very little care, while bringing just the right lively colours to the party. A balcony matching my heart, thank you for sharing :)
